MS Word works pretty well, too, if you don't want to try anything new. Some formatting glitches when you paste it in, though.

I'm certainly noticing the selection and paste functions with the rich text editor are much more finicky recently.

(1) "Can you select an editor somehow?"

You could choose to turn the wordpress text rich editor off. Many have done so with excellent results. :D Here's how to turn away from the dark side
-> dashboard -> users -> profile -> top right corner checkbox "Use the visual rich editor when writing"

(2) "Or better yet, is there some way of using an off-line editor which shows the finished result and then you click on the magic button to post it?"

You can also use a program like BlogDesk to make your posts from. Or Windows Live Writer or ...

We've been suggestion Blogdesk around here to the point I've been using it on occasion when I crosspost. TimeThief got me onto it.

Editor choice is at the top of Dashboard -> Users -> Your Profile. Sounds like you're using the rich text editor otherwise known as TinyMCE. Most of use uncheck the box, hit save and work with the normal text editor.

Hope this helps,

I go to my blog, click My Dashboard, Manage, Edit a post. That's the editor I get :) When I edit old posts I get the good old html editor but now you only get the html in a pop-up window which doesn't wordwrap even if I check the wordwrap box :S

Can you select an editor somehow? Or better yet, is there some way of using an off-line editor which shows the finished result and then you click on the magic button to post it? :P

I saw that you've made some nice changes to the toolbar when writing a post on-line. However, it's extremely finicky to select a few paragraphs, or even any text at all sometimes.

On some pieces of text in my recent post, when you click on a word, the cursor doesn't appear, so you can't insert anything, let alone click and drag to select a paragraph. If you do manage to get a cursor blinking, when you move through the text with up and down arrow keys it suddenly skips a paragraph!

What I want to do is put the cursor just before the first character in the third paragraph of the "Speed modeling" post and insert a More... thingy. But I can't. Took a quick look at the HTML and it looked ok.

Please help, this is driving me nuts. I use the latest non-beta Opera. My blog is maximilion.wordpress.com.
