There is no upgrade you can purchase that will provide FTP access and the ability to install plugins, upload themes, and/or edit templates and themes in a free hosted WordPress.com blog.

Google analytics plugin is not set up and WP.com does not seem very user-friendly with the set of allowed plug-ins.
We actually need it, as it provides more data that we need than the Stats page.
