The answer is: because that's the way the theme is designed. Please read the theme description for your theme. The link to it is found in the footer of your theme. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/autofocus/ See also the live demo site where again the theme is displayed without widgets on the front page > http://autofocusdemo.wordpress.com/

I may be wrong, but I think that's just the way the theme you're using is meant to function. The front page is more of a showcase than anything else. Have a look here at the info about the theme:

http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/autofocus/

and on that page, click on the 'live demo' button to the top right. Then when you're in the demo, have a look at any of the pages for examples. If the pages have the sidebar and the front page doesn't, on the demo, you'll know it's theme related.

And if that is so, the only alternative is to change to a different theme that gives you all you require.
