I picked the 'content to the left' in theme appearance. Whether I pick left or right, it seems to add space to BOTH sides of the page - as if it were trying to put sidebars to the left AND right. But no matter what widgets I put in the sidebar in the widgets panel, nothing shows up.

Any reason why this might be?
