I'm looking at the main stats page on the dashboard, not the widget, and I didn't realise about the time lag. I've checked it this morning and it has updated somewhat, but the time on my dashboard is wrong, which may have something to do with it? I'll update that and see if there is any progress, thanks for your help.

Which visitor counter are you referring to?

There is always a time lag between stats updating and display presented to you on your page.

I have recently added a new post and, although I have been getting notifications that people have liked it, my stats counter still shows zero.

I have been looking for a solution, and have read that I need to edit a file called 'footer.php' - I have no idea where to find this or how to edit it, any info would be appreciated, thanks!
