I guess they are"registered users"! hadn't thought of that...

I wonder if there is any way that I can make the stats function count them, then? it'd be really handy...

Maybe your students are counted as "registered users" The only other idea would be to ask Support: http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

The following are not counted:

    * Visits from registered users of the blog when they are logged in.
* Visits to uploaded documents and files
* Visits from browsers that do not execute javascript or load images.
* GoogleBot and other search engine spiders.

the blog has 20 or so active contributors (students in a class I am teaching) and I'm pretty sure it receives a certain amount of traffic as most posts have comments (one of the assignments is to comment on specific posts on a weekly basis)

Well - for starters the blog linked to your name is marked Private - so you will get no visitors other than those you specifically invite. So unless you have a very active group of friends I would not expect to see much traffic. I have not used a Private blog but I would think that Stats would show friends that actually log in.

The Stats package is automatic at WordPress.COM

since i started using my blog, the stats appear not to be working: I get a message saying "no stats are available for this time period"

do I need to activate the function? and if so, how?

I have been looking both here and in the support section for help but haven't been able to find any related topic
