To create front page post excerpts you have to split the content in the posts temeselves by inserting "the more tag"/ http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

I'm using the Reddle theme, and in Settings/Reading, I'm offered the option of posts displaying as full text, or as summaries. But whichever I select, I always get full text, and I want summaries.
