Heard back from wordpress support a few hours ago - this response helped me to fix the problem:

It looks like you have everything set up correctly for the grid layout on your home page. Now, in order to get an image to show up at the top of your excerpt you'll want to add a featured image to your post. Once you add the image, you'll see the thumbnail on the home page, just like the demo here:

I see only one Post on your site, as opposed to Pages. It's got a picture on the landing page, so I don't see the problem here.

I'm having trouble getting the images in my post(s) to appear on the main page. In other words, the image appears on the post itself, but not on the main page. It's one of the qualities that attracted me to the Sunspot theme - any suggestions? Many thanks in advance.
