For the two images you want to insert, the right side or the left side, it's up to you. Importantly, the amount of width not more than 960 pixels.
It can be changed via the CSS upgrade (I did it for my blog), or it could be through HTML commands in the text widget, by adjusting the position of the image (position: absolute). See, for example, the tutorial written by Panos (justpi), here.

I'm not sure the what the pix size is for that section.

That's the neat thing about the custom css upgrade, it can be any size (within reason) :) The image used on the "books" site is 960 pixels wide by 140 pixels tall.

If I purchased CSS, would what the command be to insert a customized header?

You would first need to upload your image to your Media Library and then something like this would get you pretty close:

#header {
	background: url( 'http://example.com/' ) no-repeat;
	height: 140px;
}

It's hard to give you the exact code without knowing exactly how big your image will be and knowing it's address on the internet.

If you do decide to purchase the upgrade we have a forum dedicated to CSS help. You can find it here: http://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization

Hi,

Are you referring to the "Girls Books" image? If so, then this would require CSS to insert. The "header image" in The Morning After is actually the polka dotted strip in the Girls Heart Books site.

Hi, I am having a difficult time customizing the Template Heading in The Morning After theme. I want to upload an image but not sure if it requires CSS? If so, not sure how to proceed.

The following blog's header is an example of what I am trying to achieve: http://girlsheartbooks.com/authors/a-j/.

I would greatly appreciate your help.
Many thanks!
