After you make your image selections and click the Create a New Gallery button in the Media Uploader, the screen changes to the Gallery screen. In the right sidebar there is a dropdown for "Type" whose options are Default (thumbnail grid), Tiles (rectangle), Square Tiles, Circles and SLIDESHOW. Select SLIDESHOW, click the Insert Gallery button.

Slideshows are now part of the Galleries feature, and have all the useful options that galleries do, including the ability to reorder, randomize, and exclude certain images from the slideshow. One thing to keep in mind is that while the old [slideshow] shortcode will continue to work, to access all the new features – such as ordering, excluding certain images, etc. – you'll need to update your shortcode to use the new [gallery type="slideshow"] format.

Getting it into the right sequence - whoa! Not at all easy. Try putting dozens of photos into newest first - oldest last sequence. Do it on different days. Omit one and try to insert it later into the proper place? Forget it - you have to delete every photo with a more recent date. Enter photos of one date, post everything & leave, then come back a few hours later to try to post some more recent photos? Won't work. Program sticks them into sequence as if you hadn't taken a break.

I sure hope this gets straightened out soon. It worked like a charm previously.
Thanks for your suggestions (upload & post each photo separately) which I have followed and which do work, albeit onerously.

It is much more complicated now to order, edit and create slideshows especially when you are uploading 50-100 photos a day to your blog. I also have many authors and contributors to my blog who no longer know how to add a slideshow, many of whom are not very computer savvy. I hope the insert slideshow button is back soon, next to insert gallery

I have never used those. I pre-size images offline before uploading them. That means I don't experience an image quality loss, don't waste my upload space and don't have to do any troubleshooting.

There are some complex technical reasons behind this and unfortunately it's just not currently possible to bring the button or ordering feature back immediately. I realize the change is an inconvenience for some, and we sincerely apologize.

If you require finer control over the slideshow order beyond what's currently possible using one of the techniques I described here, you might want to look at using a gallery as an alternative in the meantime.

While there isn't a way to reorder existing slideshows, there are two ways to set the order on a new slideshow:

Method 1

  • Add slideshow images to the Media Library
  • Attach each image one by one to the post
  • Add your slideshow shortcode to the post
  • The images will display in the same order you attached them to the post

Method 2

  • Add images one at a time to a post using the Add Media button
  • Wait until one image is done uploading before uploading the next one
  • Add your slideshow shortcode to the post.
  • The images will display in the same order you uploaded them to the post
