Can I just ask, if I apply the read more tag, will it truncate the post on the home page, or just when it's archived? Also do I have to do each post individually?

In most themes what you get on the front page is what you get in the categories and archives pages too. See here please > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/25/full-posts-in-archive-pages/

The more tag must be inserted into each post on the theme up are using. Very few themes can be set up to display only beginnings of posts on the front page automatically.

Note that the more tag and the excerpt function are not the same.

I have twenty-eleven therme and I'm wondering if this theme limits the number of categories it can display in the category widget? Because not all of my categories are showing up no matter how many times I try.

For example, I have 12 posts in which I checked both the 'Songs' sub-category box under the Parent 'Music' category box - which is also checked for each post. All 12 'Song' posts show up on the 'All Posts' page. But on my Home page, only 2 'Song' posts are displayed instead of the full 12.

On the Edit Post page of each of these 12 posts, I have checked both the 'Music' Parent category & the "Song' sub-category.

Can someone please help!

So it's nice that the new theme allows both options.

Twentiy Ten could also use the custom excerpt function for categories and archives pages.

Twenty Eleven doesn't have the custom excerpt function directly: one must select "gallery" from the format module after pasting in your custom excerpt.

But if you are asking about showing only the first part of your posts on category and archive pages, then you could use the read more tag:

Or if you are asking about how to have a customized excerpt for each post, then you need to paste the html code into the excerpt module. You can include pictures and other formatting. Then from the format module, choose "gallery."

I've upgraded to the twenty eleven theme that I love, but my archive and category links now link to full text, instead of having 3/4 lines of each post showing? Is there someway I can change it?
