I just now was reading reviews of website makers and one person mentioned the WordPress website makers. What? So I decided to click onto WordPress.ORG and in one flash I see a website which looks just fine to me!

So I am going back to check out more webste templates (rather than blog templates) and see if I might just stick with a WordPress website and WordPress web hosting.

On the other hand, I have researched and sieved out an easy and good web making program called SandVox.

So it seems that my options are opening up.

A good thing: I finally figured out how to get just one huge picture onto my Home Page. Now the task is two-fold:

1. Get rid of that blue "Nothing Found" box

2. Get rid of the "Blog at WordPress.com" banner which is seen below the light blue "Nothing Found" window.

After and if I can get those two things done, then I think I might try to construct my iWeb site with a WordPress template and stick with WordPress or wherever is a good place to host a website. I have no idea what this is all about since I have never before paid for my website being hosted.

I want to place small pictures representing the themes in my website. I want viewers to be able to click a picture and be taken to the page that has all the pages in that category.

I would probably have about ten pictures, maybe more.

I hope this is all possible because I am so used to the WordPress process and I have been reading that WordPress is a good host for websites. It has a good reputation in the YouTube tutorial videos.

HI. I have not decided what I will do and I want to find out about all of my options.

Option 1, which is already clear: Take my existing iWeb website to GoDaddy.

Option 2, which is to re-do my iWeb website using a WordPress template using Pages and making the Home Page look like a website, meaning NO sidebars and NO comments at the bottom.

Option 3, remake my iWeb website with a totally different application like Sandvox and use whatever 3 part web server that is good. Would WordPress take a Sandvox made website? Or does WordPress only accept websites and blogs that are made with WordPress templates? (I would assume the latter rather than the former for the obvious and understandable reasons.)

So that is why I am asking in this forum. My questions in this forum are pertaining only to my Option 2 above.

Timethief, Re: your last question about registering a username account at WordPress.org. Is that required? Excuse these beginner questions, but I have never ever used anything except WordPress.com and Blogger.com.

I am told that my iWeb website WILL be accepted by GoDaddy as it is, and I can go on using my iWeb app for as long as I wish, but in fact, it is also said that iWeb has bad code and is not great with search engines. The thing is, I don't care about high viewership for that personal blog. I have just been keeping it to refer friends to. On the other hand, I don't like the reputation that iWeb has and that it has stopped being included in the Apple software.

To cover my bases, I downloaded a software program that seems a lot like iWeb. I viewed their video and it looked familiar, just like iWeb, but more features, so there would be a tiny learning curve for me.

So far with WordPress I have not found a website that does not look like a blog. When I say "doesn't look like a blog" I mean "doesn't have a side bar or a comments section on the home page." My personal website has a greeting page which is a picture. On it there is an array of pix, any of which lead to the Index. At the Index I have thumbails, each of which leads to a different section. Lots of slideshows, videos, and pix.

I like the idea of putting my website as is on GoDaddy, but I dislike the idea that it has bad code and that the application for making it is now obsolete, never to improve, never to be fixed.

Making an image link to more than one URL is called image mapping. You can do it here:
http://www.isdntek.com/tagbot/imap.htm
But first you need to create an image in the exact dimensions required. For example, the version of the image on olalaboutique's front page is 770px wide, but the uploaded original is 1000px wide (automatically downsized by WP to fit the theme). That image won't do: you must first downsize it yourself in an image editing application.

Olaboutique, hi

That page looks a lot like one of the WordPress templates, yes, but that Courier type is probably from the HTML kit that one buys to personalize and tweak the original.

What I want to do is recreate my Apple website, created in iWeb, to the WordPress platform. The problem is that I am not able to see how to make a static home page that LOOKS like my website home page: One picture with a bunch of pictures, each linking to an Index page.

At the Index page, I have a bunch of small thumbnail photos, each one linking to a Page. Some of those pages link to still other sub pages.

But Wow, WordPress does not so far have the ability for me to just put a picture on the home page. 8-(

Dear absurdoldbird, you mentioned themes that offer a full width page. In fact, I am not yet working with any theme/template. I am in the stage of looking for a template that can do what I want in making my website.

I have an iWeb website in my MobilMe gallery, but soon Apple will no longer host it, so I have to figure out ways to get the content into another platform. I don't know whether to use something like RapidWeaver and then find a place that will host the website etc etc... and it seems to me that WordPress would be a lot easier on me financially if I can get a look that I like from the templates available.

Anyhow, I did what you said. I began to experiment for themes with Dawn to Dusk. I went to Dashboard > Add New page > Page Attributes > and chose a full-width template. (It is offered in Dawn to Dusk!)

Then I uploaded a picture, and have a page that looks like a post with my picture.

What I want is a picture on the whole front page with a few tabs/links to go to the various pages of the website.

Is this possible? So far I have what looks like a blog with a post. 8-(

Some themes have an option to make pages full width, and then they won't show the sidebar. (I'm not sure about the footer, though.) As I don't know what theme you're using, I can't say if yours offers the full width option. However, the place to look is on your dashboard - 'add new page' then in 'page attributes' module you should see 'Template' and a drop down menu. If a full-width template is available for your theme, you should be able to choose it from there.

I understand the difference between Pages and Posts. If I make a website using a WORDPRESS theme, then the first page will be the permanent, static page. I would like that to be a picture with a few words on it.

How do I get the entire first page be static and just a picture?

Or will there always have to be a sidebar or footer?

Actually I was thinking that same thing about remembering seeing vertical nav bars. Anyhow, I Googled WordPress websites and found a lot of sites. I just now viewed a YouTube video (excellent video) on how to make a WordPress website.

Thank you to Timethief and Sacred Path.

The location of the navigation has nothing to do with it really, it is just that typically traditional websites have horizontal top navigation, but that is not a hard and fast rule. I've done many traditional websites with vertical navigation (sidebar). It just depends on the design and what works best for a particular site.

Timethief, would I be right in thinking that there is no place titled: These are the themes with horizontal navigation bars rather than a conventional blog structure.
