The new domain needs to be pointed at the wordpress.com nameservers which are:

ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.com

After that is done, wait about 6-12 hours and you should be able to go through the domain mapping although it might take up to 72 hours for the changes to propagate all around the internet.
