If you would like to see images appear side by side on the same line, put the images next to each other and give them both either left or right alignment. Make sure the images are small enough that they will both fit on one line, including borders and margins.

I think you can solve your problem by checking the left, centre, right, fullsize Image Position Options while uploading the images.

That way I'm in control of photo and text placement and the editor isn't. And I can use any theme and get the results I want.

These each include styles that make the visual editor appearance more like your blog's appearance. If you're adding a lot of photos and text those may help you organize your layout more efficiently.
