Turns out the trouble was in my captions. Since I included a line break, WordPress interpreted that as code and my images broke.

Thanks raincoaster, wish I knew enough about coding to understand your message the first time.

the citation isn't a code. It is just a description of the image. Ie. 1880 U.S. census. Adams, MA. Edward Greenwood household.

In my earlier post I edited out all my words and summarized them inside brackets [ ]. If you would like, I can post it as it looks to me.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not at all sure you can include citation code in a caption. What happens when you try it without?

I am using Chunk. I upload pictures from my computer, add a caption, and insert into my post. All looks well until I hit preview and then I get gobbly gook. My pictures disappear, my captions have code in them. They look like this:

[odd rectangular box][citation] ” src=”http://climbinggreenwood.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/gen_ex-1880-census-greewood1.jpg?w=580″ width=”580″ height=”60″ /> [caption]
[citation]

-- when I want them to show a picture, the caption, a space line "----" and the citation.

Sometimes, I don't even get the gobble gook and I just get a small white box.

I am too afraid to publish -- i don't wan't the gobbly gook to represent my work -- so this is all on my drafting pages.

I have dumped a bunch of cookies.

Is there an easy fix for this?
Thanks for your time and help, Leslie
