Could it be that I chose a theme (Auto Focus by Allan Cole) that doesn't support widgets? The "Quick Specs" for the theme says it does:

"Widget-enabled sidebars are enabled on all pages.
Single post sidebars will in lieu of widgets show important post metadata."
