To add the simple icon badge, go to the Google+ badges page. On the left, under "Google+ user," it should say "Features" and give you a choice between "icon" and "small badge." Choose "icon." You can add a custom name and choose the size of the icon. Then just take the code it generates on the right-hand side and paste it where you want it to appear on your site.
