I had the same problem, so unless they have changed it since, that is one (convoluted) way to sort it. Then you need to go back to your post.

Forum says to click and drag to select image I want to keep, then click on crop button. It will not let me drag to select, and the save button will not activate. When I tried the upgrade button in image edit column, it did not save, either.
Also, I need to know which I do first: crop the image or set as feature image. I have iTheme2, which is not listed in the themes which indicate recommended image dimensions. Thank you.
