Posting what the img line looks like that you're trying to upload would be a help. Please be sure to include it with backticks. That's the key to the left of the '1' key and above the tab on the standard PC keyboard.

If it's causing Javascript errors, it sounds like Word is trying to add in it's own javascripts. Those are stripped due to security concerns.

There is something in the FAQ talking about MS Word. Might want to take a look at this page:
http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/09/why-not-to-use-word/

Word causes a lot of tag errors and you may want to use some of wordpress' recommended options at the bottom. Hope this helps you.

I've been using Word 2007 to write and publish my blog posts. Generally everything works great, except when I want to add an image. Whenever it goes to add a photo (to WordPress or another FTP server) the photo is uploaded correctly but the IMG tag is blank without source (renders as "<img />". It ends up causing JavaScript errors on the edit page and the public site.

It would be great if there were something in the FAQ about setting up WordPress wot work correctly with Word 2007. So far nothing seems to include information about uploading pictures.
