I think WP puts that in there automatically. I have them on mine and I know I'm not adding in a <p> anywhere. I actually dislike how when I use the blockquote tag and it goes down a couple of lines.

Probably would require a rewrite of the code.

Although I can't understand why you want to remove them. They're only there for layout. ;)
