Add oxygen's slider feature to a static blog page

  1. Hello wordpress wise-ones!

    Any help you can provide in regards to the following would be very much appreciated!

    I am currently running the oxygen theme with the showcase page (slider) enabled. I am looking to obtain the css code for placing the same slider (ie. the 6-photo auto-change feature including links attached to each of the 6 photos) to a regular blog page (ie. a static page). Is this possible (albeit, so long as the css customization is purchased)? Ideally, I'd love to create a new blog altogether running the oxygen theme (with css customization active) without the showcase page enabled but with a set static front page displaying only the slider (in addition to the header, menu, and footer items of course).

    Thank you, thank you, thank you!! :)

    The blog I need help with is costaricatravelblog.com.

    You cannot do this with CSS only, however, what you've described is exactly how page templates work and Oxygen's slideshow feature is part of a page template.

    Here are the instructions for how to set a page template. Try following the steps and reply back here if you have any trouble:

  3. Hey designsimply!

    Thank you SO much for your response! It is very, very much appreciated.

    I believe I have a decent understanding of how the showcase template works. This is what I am using for my blog's main page - a page set to the "showcase page" template which displays the 6-photo slider with the "recent articles" and "more articles" sections below. The site is currently set-up this way and is working well.

    The issue I am looking to resolve however is that I would like to have a page that displays only the slider (without the "recent articles" and "more articles" sections below). I am not sure if this is possible via templates. I tried creating a new page altogether and assigning it as the "showcase page" although that just resulted in a duplicate page of my front page (ie. a duplicate of the showcase page) as I believe there is only one "showcase page" template option.

    How do I accomplish one of the following two things, either:
    1. Remove the "recent articles" and "more articles" sections from the showcase page so that only the slider appears on the page?
    or
    2. Create a new page with only the slider present?

    Ideally I am looking to have a page that displays the slider only (in addition to the menus, but without the "recent articles" and "more articles" sections), but I cannot figure out how to obtain this via either of the two methods listed above.

    Is this possible?

    Thank you again!! :)

  4. You create a page and select the showcase template for it, and you add this in the CSS editor:

    .recent-articles, .more-articles {
        display: none;
    }
  5. Justpi -

    That's perfect! Thanks so much it worked like a charm.

    Now that I have removed the "recent articles" and "more articles" sections, how do I go about adding plain text in the empty white space below (where the "recent articles" and "more articles" sections previously were)?

    Thank you!!

  6. You're welcome.

    a) Link to the blog/page in question please.
    b) Long or short text? One continuous and uniform block, or with paragraph breaks and/or other differentiations?
    c) Right sidebar on or off?

  7. Justpi -

    The blog I am inquiring about is: http://costaricatourdiscounts.wordpress.com/

    I have successfully set up the slider and made it the front page. I also removed the "recent articles" and "more articles" sections (thanks to your wonderful css help above).

    Originally, I had a number of widgets running down the left and right columns of the page (twitter, facebook, etc.). When I removed the "recent articles" and "more articles" sections, this left the entire centre column blank. I wasn't sure at the time how to fill that centre column with text, so I deleted most of the widgets from the outside columns to shorten the blog's length and eliminate as much "white space" as possible.

    Here's where I'm currently at. Ideally, I'd love to be able to turn off the right sidebar (I can get rid of the "can't find what you are looking for" text widget that's currently in place - no problem) and include a few paragraphs of text across the centre and right column (essentially merging these two sections into one section). If turning off the right sidebar on the front page (showcase page) will turn it off on all subsequent pages than I'd rather just leave it in. If this was the case, then I'd just need a way to add a few paragraphs of text (introducing readers to the blog) down the centre column only.

    Thanks again - you are awesome! :)

  8. I'm seeing you found the one of the ways you could use to add the text!

    You also added this:

    #tertiary {
        display: none;
    }

    If you wish to remove the right sidebar on the front page only, then you can change the selector to:
    .page-template-showcase-php #tertiary
    or:
    .home #tertiary

  9. Can I get an answer as to why on earth I'm following the instructions to a 't' and yet as soon as I assign the Showcase Page template to a static page, it turns into the blog post?

    I've already set the static page up as the "Front Page Display" and created a new page for the blog posts, but this still happens. Also, once I have the slider, only one sticky post appears even though I've made three posts sticky.

  10. @jodellefsdj, I assume you are talking about this site: http://jodellefayedejesus.com .

    The showcase page template in Oxygen will show up to 6 posts you have set as "sticky" in the top post slider and will show additional recent posts below that slider as well as a additional posts (titles only) in two columns below the recent posts. You can find more information about using the Oxygen theme here: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/oxygen/

    If you want your main page to be only a static page with no posts listed (I see you have your About Me page set as your static main page) then open that page in the editor and set it back to the either the default or full-width page templates. You can then set the blog page to use the showcase template if you wish, or you can set it also to use the default or full-width template if you do not wish to have the showcase format on the blog page.

    If you want your main static front page to show the post slider at the top and NOT show the recent posts or more articles section below, you can add this CSS code, give above by @justpi, to hide those items from the showcase page. You add the code at Appearance > Custom Design > CSS tab.

    .recent-articles, .more-articles {
    display: none;
    }

    If you also wish to hide the sidebar on the showcase template, add the following too:

    .home #tertiary {
    display: none;
    }
  11. Can Someone please give me step by step directions on how to create the featured slider, i'm really having a hard time figuring it out.

  12. @hopoffthis, take a look at the Oxygen theme showcase page which explains how to use the showcase main page and the post slider at the top: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/oxygen/ .
