Adding a category page doesn't seem to work

    Hi guys, I've had a good look through some forums and on support but with no luck, I'm trying to add a category page to my menu at the side. So far I have followed the instructions here;
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

but nothing is coming up. I've tried adding an empty page first under the same title and still nothing. Can anyone help me on what I should do? I appear to be doing it wrong!
    many thanks!

The blog I need help with is evolveandexpress.wordpress.com.

  2. Pages we bloggers create are static and adding them to the menu will not work because they will not update. You need to add the dynamic Categories pages created by the software that do update.

You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic Categories pages which are automatically created by the software when we publish posts, into the custom menu as a menu item
    create custom menu http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
add dynamic category and sub-catgory pages created by the software to it

Thank you timethief for your answer,
I have read all the links you sent me and I am still not successful. I wasn't looking to create sub-pages but I followed your instructions on your blog as if I was just doing categories on one page.

I now seem to have removed my other three pages and have two new pages. One as a catagory page and the other empty. Do i have to make custom pages for all these to work? From what I've read I don't but this doesn't seem to be working.

  5. You don't create static pages and then make them be category pages. A category page is of the format: whatever.wordpress.com/category/categoryname

You make posts. You put them in categories and once you have posts in that category the category page creates itself. You can use a Custom menu to link to it. But you can't do that before the posts exist, because the page does not exist.

Thanks again guys, I have read and re-read these forums and supports. I am a little further in achieving the page I want.

I do understand about creating posts with categories now and I have my URL of this chosen category ready to be pasted over in my custom menu link, which I have done.
It's in its own sub category under the heading and page I want it to be in, but doesn't take me to the URL just writes it on the page.
Is there something I am doing wrong here?

  7. Yes. You keep trying to use static pages you created and that will not work. Please, please go here and read this > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

Thank you both for your help.
I was very frustrated so I left it alone yesterday and tried again today. As far as I know I tried the same things I had already tried, which I was continually reading and re-reading, but this afternoon it has worked exactly how I wanted it!

    Thanks again.
