Can someone explain to me how Google Ad Sense ads could possibly show up on my blog without my permission? I know I have a free WordPress.com blog, but does that mean Google can post ads on it whenever they want?

No, it means WordPress can post Google ads whenever they want, as outlined in the Terms of Service you agreed to when you signed up here. You can, if you wish, get rid of them by purchasing the No Ads upgrade.
