  1. Hi guys,

So we're a small time music blog but we're starting to get some recognition from the scene now and it's about time we stepped up our game.

I was emailed the other day from a company asking if we would be willing to host a small add space on the site advertising merchandise for Four major Drum & Bass labels but I figured that we weren't allowed to put up any advertisements on our free wordpress site ourselves, especially if we were taking a profit from it. Thus we need to buy our own domain, something I've wanted to do for a while anyway. I was going to purchase one off of wordpress seeing as we like our current theme and can keep that and we have no web developers or designers of our own to build us a site from scratch elsewhere.

If we purchase our own domain from wordpress will we be able to embed a html code from an external company to host their advert? If not what are our options? If so do we need to inform wordpress?

    Safe,

    Josh@BtB

The blog I need help with is bitethebelt.wordpress.com.

No all that changes is the URL. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

No blogger initiated advertising, paid content or sponsored content is allowed on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. You need to create an XML export file of your content to move it to Move to wordpress.org. It will not include the theme as they cannot be exported. See 3 below.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.

    1. Hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/

    2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.

    http://wordpress.org/plugins/

    3. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.

    4. Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ or if you have domain mapping then update the nameservers http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/

    5. Transfer subscribers and stats. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/

  3. Thanks very much, you covered everything I needed to know.

So just to confirm that I've got this right...

I can't advertise on my, now purchased from wordpress, domain http://www.bitethebelt.com as it still falls under wordpress' terms and conditions.

So I have to purchase some domain space elsewhere e.g. GoDaddy and use wordpress.org as my way of building a replica site. Then I have to export everything from my old wordpress site and install it all onto the new site and hook all the domains and subscribers up to it as well.

Something that will cost me monthly as opposed to a small annual fee. All for the sake of one hardly profitable advertising slot.

I'll also have to source some sort of web developer from somewhere (inevitably costing me more money) to help maintain and build the site.

  4. Correct. Confirm by reading http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
