aggregate excerpt

  1. Is there a way to take my blog posts excerpts and syndicate them to another website to drive traffic to my blog? I'd like this other site to have short excerpts of my latest blog posts in order to give them a taste of what can be found on my personal blog here on wordpress.com. I realize that I could try to aggregate the RSS feed but I was wondering if there was a simpler way that I could figure out because I have no idea how to aggregate these RSS feeds. Thanks for any support.

The blog I need help with is asuh.wordpress.com.

  2. Ping.fm legitimately does what you're looking for.

  3. Thank you, arifsali! However, I should have been more specific. I'm looking to write some code on a custom site that I'm building from scratch. So I can't use another 3rd party service in between as that would add another indirect channel to aggregate.

  4. Now I'm not sure what exactly are you looking for. In terms of RSS aggregation, Yahoo Pipes is the most advanced.

  5. Let me be very specific since you haven't made sense of it.

On my blog, asuh.wordpress.com, I am planning to write regular blog posts. Every time I write a new blog post, I want an external site, externalsite.com, to automatically display an updated excerpt of my newest blog post. This way, when you go to externalsite.com, you will see an excerpt of what I just wrote on asuh.wordpress.com to display on externalsite.com.

Is this easy to do? I'm not very familiar with how to read RSS feeds like this, but I tried to use code to pull the excerpt but it didn't work as I was hoping.

  6. I can imagine that it is doable because that is exactly what splogs do. They steal legitimate content and autopost through RSS. However, the reverse is impossible here on WordPress.com. You cannot take your outside website's content to autopost on WordPress.com through RSS (just saying, I know this is not what you're looking for). I am not sure how sploggers do it.

In terms of getting an excerpt of the RSS feed of your blog here at WordPress, you can just set the setting to provide summary feed and that is exactly what you would get, an excerpt of the post via RSS and not the full post.

  7. Okay. That's good to know. And as you said, I had no intention of to autopost TO wordpress.com, as is not allowed.

I guess I just need some help getting that excerpt info onto my external site or to know how others have done it either using RSS or otherwise. I know through WordPress.org you can directly grab it using login through wp-login.php but it doesn't work that way with wordpress.com. Maybe there's a similar way? Or is RSS my only hope?

I really do hope someone can come through with some support to help b/c I'm honestly clueless how to get the rest of this done!

  8. Its' going to be useless to you unless externalsite.com, whatever it is, already has an audience. Do you have such a site already, or are you just casting around for ideas?

Most people, frankly, use Facebook and Twitter for this. But you can also use Friendfeed.

  9. yes raincoaster, it does have an audience. I am trying to get ideas on how to do this, too, because it will be good to know for future projects or businesses which require the same.
