Allowing Subscriptions to a private site

  1. Can I allow subscriptons to a private site? We are creating a private family blog and would like to be able to send notifications automatically via email to let people know there is a new post to read. Ideally we would like the notification to be readable in the email program and not require signing into a WordPress account . Let us know if this is feasible through WordPress.

The blog I need help with is whatsupwiththejones.wordpress.com.

Well with a private site, people have to have a wordpress.com account to view the site, and they need to be approved by you. Otherwise they won't be able to see the site. Once they have a wordpress account, then they'll be able to subscribe to it, and get email notifications about a new post, and can read the entire post in the email (as long as you don't use the more tag, I believe).

    Hopefully that helps.

  3. Yes, you have to put the subscription widget in the sidebar, and you can't use any theme that offers only snippets of a post on the main page, or that's all they'll get. And you must set your RSS feed to Full Post rather than Summary.

Be aware that any kind of subscription is a security risk.
