Any news on a new video widget? Lockerz?
That was clear when I wrote my first message.
You're right, I quoted your words.
But I used them because I felt they better summared WP stance on issues like that.
And, despite macmanx' last message stressing WP efforts on this issue - which is very good to know -, I still think that WP should adopt a much more steady stance when it comes to situations like this (third-party issues).
So, in that sense, I still keep my first words.
Now trying to contribute in another way, I wonder if the [vodpod] gadget couldn't redirect to an error message, until the issue is solved.
The way it is now, it simply shows nothing, so, depending on its usage, a post can be made completely senseless.
In my case, I frequently post videos plus a text refering to them, so if the video is turned into a blank line like it is now, the post becomes completely without sense.
If an error message showed up, then, at least, readers would know that the blogger is still on charge of his/her mental capabilities.
And if you will consider this, then, please, don't forget that not all blogs are in english, which is my case.
I think a solution needs to be found and that if lockerz is having trouble with coding, wordpress and the original vodpod owner should help them.
Not wanting to judge it seems to me that lockerz priority is to sell frills to teenagers and couldn't give a hoot about wordpress users, but wordpress should be able to make them change their mind.
In their farewell post vodpost promises that lockerz will keep vodopod functioning, I sincerely hope that that was in the contract they signed.
I need someone to pay for the hours that will take to change a hundred posts. and of course there is the issue of our prospective clients and employers looking at posts that make no sense whatsoever.
For us, right now and in this economy, this is a life and death issue. I'm sorry we ever went with wordpress, now. For the most part it had served us very well but this is no time to do this...
I will submit my application on Tuesday and I'll probably be up for another two nights changing the code to something that may not even work later either, but there is no way that I can upload the thousands of photos to wordpress, especially when I'm already paying google. I will have to go with their blogging service, I'm afraid. And that is what I'm looking into... if I'm going to have to change a hundred posts it better be to something that works.
If I had been warned at least I could have been working on this for a couple of extra days... tragic... to us, anyway.
I may add that we started our blog in 2005. I would prefer to stay with wordpress but sorry but it's not our fault is not going to cut it...
I agree with glapido: WP should have at least informed us about removing the Vodpod/Lockerz-Widget. WP shouldn't be that careless with wordpress users. a lot of programmers make an effort to create the wordpress-blogsoftware and a lot of users make an effort to create content.
by removing vodpod/lockerz WP made a lot of the blogarticles - as glapido explained - indeed senseless. and i still don't understand, why lockerz has been removed, because as I already mentioned: it was not perfect, but it was better than what we have now: incorrect articles. and you certainly unterstand that we care about that.
Thank you all for contributing to this thread. I have compassion for what mjneal and others are dealing with. For me, the loss of the widget has left a big empty space on my frontpage and has eliminated a key feature of my blog, which heavily relies on the Video Press capabilities: http://drlorax.wordpress.com/
I encourage all to continue to (respectfully) post here and in the forum about how the loss of vodpod has affected your websites. Let WP know how important these features and capabilities are to you.
Thank you also to macmanx. I appreciate your quick responses to our questions and frustrations, and that WP could not change/affect what happened to vodpod. I would strongly support and encourage the development of new video features, especially a widget.
As I wrote in my original post, it really tied the room together.
Respect would have been to email us three weeks ago, when this happened, to let us know that our front page was missing an important element and that a hundred of our posts and all the hard work that went into them, were rendered idiotic.
We re-enabled the shortcode, and the embeds from VodPod appear to be working in some cases, like the Picasa slideshows on mjneal's blog, but not the CNN video on our support doc.
We're still working through various things to see if it's even possible to get it back up to working 100%, but as we have no control over VodPod's operations, we can't make any promises.
The widget itself is still broken.
@mjneal: That would have been very un-WP-like.
In the case of third-party services, we are working on a way in the future to notify users as soon as we notice any going offline or being discontinued, but we encourage you to follow the services themselves, as they may make an announcement before we notice.

As for the widget behaviour, in my case, there are - as far as I can see - two situations:
1 - The widget works as expected - This post uses vodpod to embed a Rutube video, and is up and running:
2 - The widget still doesn't work, but now it "occupies" the space it would use if the video was showing. This post uses vodpod to embed a Youtube video:
You should leave it as it is now, since it works in some cases.

We're going to leave it up. VodPod was never the most accurate after all. It never worked right in some cases, it's just quite a bit more noticeable now as the failure rate from VodPod is higher.

Well, in my case, before Lockerz entered the game, both entries were working.
I also advise people to go to Lockerz Help Desk, at http://support.lockerz.com/home, and create a ticket there.
However, this should not avoid WP from also putting pressure on them. I think this would be the most effective way of getting heard. Unless Vodpod widget users are just me and mjneal, which I honestly don't believe.
In Lockerz forums, there is this workaround instruction:

Excellent news and it is also fantastic that the need to warn users of issues of this importance has arised and addressed.
I will try the work-around for the widget, since it made the page look much better... has it worked for anyone?
I think that people, like us, haven't noticed their blogs were missing their video and slideshow vodpod embeds, as one doesn't usually look back on entries unless is looking for something like I was....
Allright, thanks again, I ended up using some images on side bar and linking to the slideshows that way, so I don't get bitten again by vodpod, but SUCH a relief not to have to go back 100 entries and having to modify each one!
Both videos and slideshows seem to be working, what a relief! I have not reviewed each one, I will report if I find anything else.
Now on to my hunt for a button that will remove all of the "like" buttons, I don't like them!!!!
You can remove the Like buttons from each post by going to Settings -> Sharing in your blog's Dashboard and selecting, "WordPress.com Likes are Turned on per post."
glapido, I think they're referring to the shortcode box in the widget, since that's the only box in the widget.
Regardless though, the widget still appears to be broken, even with their recommended alterations.
when I put in "turned on per post" it put back in the ones I had taken out, grrrrr.... but at least now I wont have to uncheck it every time, and way to take them all out in all back posts?
That should have disable it for all previous posts (at least it did on my test blogs, where I checked before replying). If not, you'll need to manually remove it on each.
That's right, the ones that I hadn't modified, it went away, the ones that I had, I had to redo, but the math is better this way! Great ! Ok off to finish that application... thanks again, guys!!

I did a search for "vodpod" and was able to see where there are vodpod-embedded videos and which work and wich don't. so it was possible to replace some of the vodpod-embedded videos for example by youtube-videos.
I understand, that there might be multiple problems integrating third party services like vodpod/lockerz. it would be great to have such a video-feature by WP. it especially makes sense for film blogs (such as mine: http://angleika.wordpress.com/).
does anyone of you guys by chance know, if there is such a video tool integrated in the wordpress.org-software? (as I was thinking about moving my blog ...)
Hello everyone! I understand that Lockerz bought VodPod, made some changes, and hence the source of our current pain.
The wider question I think is why WP.com / Automattic only allow embedding of YouTube & Vimeo. That does cover a lot, but Kickstarter has their own video hosting, Bravo Channel, and on and on.
So we had the VodPod "trick" to embed videos on our blogs.
Why do we need a trick? Does "laundering" a Kickstarter or any other video thru VodPod first somehow create a security wall for WP.com?
Is there no way to create a more "normal" embed?
We allow a lot more than just YouTube and Vimeo: http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/
We can't allow straight embeds, as we would need to allow all Flash embeds, and that can pose a security risk.
In order to post a video on WordPress.com, the provider would need to either offer an oEmbed service approved in the WordPress.org core software (like YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Blip.tv, and Hulu), or work with us on a shortcode (like Viddler, TED, Flickr, and Videolog).
Back to the main subject, fyi, I received, today, an update from Lockerz Guru Mason, regarding a request I had openned a couple of days ago at their help forum.
Mason says that they're waiting to hear something from WP.COM.
What would that be?
