Audio file won't play

  1. I inserted an mp3 file into a post from my computer (iTunes). I can see it in Gallery, and clicked "None" under Link UR before inserting it in the post. It never gets past "buffering". I bought the Space Upgrade, and followed the directions, but it won't play, at least in Draft-Preview mode.

The blog I need help with is pclaphil.org.

  2. Give us the URL of the file please, or publish the post so we can check things.

  3. Here is the url for the unpublished draft
    http://pclaphil.org/?p=325&preview=true.
Not sure if you can see it since I haven't published it yet. I can publish it if I need to for you to see it.

For the mp3 file, I went to iTunes and copied this into Gallery
    File name: 01-december-1963-oh-what-a-night.m4a

    File type: audio/mpeg

  4. If we volunteers could access unpublished posts I wouldn't have written "publish the post so we can check things".

  5. OK, very sorry. Just published it. Still just buffers. Here is the url of my dashboard view
    http://pclaphil.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=325&action=edit

    I really appreciate your help.

  6. Thanks.
Note that again you gave the URL of a dashboard page. The URL that others can access is this:
    http://pclaphil.org/2012/05/19/glittering-memories-of-grand-salon-2012/

Your file will never work because it's an mp4: the audio player works with mp3s only.

  7. I was able to get it to work by substituting an mp3 file. http://pclaphil.org/2012/05/19/glittering-memories-of-grand-salon-2012/ (I do learn, eventually)

When you add media, one of the allowed file types is m4a. I don't understand why the audio player doesn't work with an allowed file type.

Anyway, thank you so much for your patience and your help.

  8. You're welcome.

What you can upload and what works in a post aren't the same. For instance, you can upload a PDF or a Word doc but you can't insert them in a post, you can only link to them so that others can open them or download them. Same way, if you have the Space Upgrade you can upload m4a files, but the audio player can process mp3 files only: that's a limitation of the current WP audio player. (And the WP Support doc on audio is confusing, to put it mildly. Are you aware of the fact that you don't even need the Space Upgrade to insert audio?)

  9. All the user forums and help documents I read led me to believe I had to get the Space Upgrade to play audio. How do you insert audio without it?

    Thanks so much. You're terrific.

  10. Uploading and inserting are two different things. The audio player needs the URL of an mp3, so the mp3 must be uploaded somewhere. That somewhere can be your blog, but it doesn't have to be your blog: you can upload your mp3s in a free file-hosting site that gives direct URLs. Suggested sites: Fileden and Kiwi6.

  11. I'll try it. Thanks a lot.

  12. You're welcome!
