In addition to posting some of my pieces, I'd like to offer the reader the option of listening to me speak the post.
Is this something I can do? And if so, how?
I've read the support info on this topic, but it's a little "past" my beginner understanding.

You can't use your own voice though.
If you want your own voice, record your reading, save it as mp3, upload online and embed
the mp3 file in your wordpress.com blog.
Thank you. Does that latter option (uploading an mp3) require an upgrade to my account or is it part of the free WP.com?
To upload mp3s to your blog, you need the Space upgrade. But you don't need it in order to embed an audio player in a post: you can upload the mp3s to a free file storage site such as Fileden.
