Automatically be subscribed to posts to which someone has commented?

  1. There is a little checkbox when you post a comment to "notify me of follow-up comments via email."

Do those only notify you of followups to your particular posts, or followups to the entire blog post?

Is there a way of having this "checked" by default instead of unchecked? Most of my followers would overlook that when posting a comment.

    Thanks,

    doug

The blog I need help with is douglerner.wordpress.com.

  2. Do those only notify you of followups to your particular posts, or followups to the entire blog post?

They notify you of each and every comment ever made on the post.

Is there a way of having this "checked" by default instead of unchecked?

When the default was changed the outraged responses from bloggers who were not impressed by being flooded with unwanted email resulted in a restoration of the former default setting http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/stop-email-notifications-for-comments-on-other-peoples-blogs?replies=134

Update (May 17): Since this feature went live we’ve had a bunch of feedback and it looks like following comments by default is not a good fit for a lot of bloggers (and their readers) after all. We looked at a few different options, but for now we’ve just changed things back to how they were before. To follow a conversation, make sure you check the box when you post a comment. http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2012/05/15/follow-comments/

  3. Hi, Timethief.

    Thanks for the information.

Well this is frustrating. I keep on coming back to wordpress.com and trying because it has so much to offer!

But then I run into roadblock after roadblock which seems designed to make participation difficult!

The answer to the dilemma posed in that thread is simple: let each blog decide its own default and let each follower override that default if they don't like it.

My own Posterous followers (still trying to find a place to move them) tend not to be very computer savvy. And a lot of them are in their 80s and 90s. And in many cases their vision isn't that great either.

I finally got one guy who is 92 and helping me test finally realize that he can't reply to posts by email (his replies were going nowhere) and he now uses the Comment button. But he doesn't notice the "receive email notifications" checkbox when he posts. Heck, on some WordPress blogs even I've overlooked that multiple times. It's just one more thing you have to be careful of and remember to do. (Whatever happened to "don't make me think"?).

It's just frustrating. Every time I come back really loving wordpress.com for it's incredible appearance and all its strong points, I run into these crazy hurdles which seem designed to make it difficult for my followers to engage and participate!

It reminds me of the Chompers in "Galaxy Quest." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqVqxWU-Itg)

  4. I'm sorry that my answer was not the one you wanted to hear.

  5. Well, it's not your fault, Timethief. Or is it? :)

I just have to find the best system/place/whatever to make sure I don't lose the participation of my current followers.

It's less than 100 people, but they are people who are important to me.

    Thanks,

    doug

  6. Of course it's not my fault. I have provided the answer to your question above. I have no other information to provide and neither do any other Volunteers. As you can see from the Staff post in the official WordPress.com blog the decision has been made, so will you please mark this thread "resolved"?

  7. Marked as unresolved as per Timethief's demand and since the subject is, according to Timethief, no longer open for discussion.

  8. I meant "resolved" (even though it isn't). I'm marking it that way under protest.

  9. Oh for pity sake, Doug. If you want to dissuss this with other bloggers then please do - just remove the "resolved" and discuss this all you want.

  10. I have tried to be real polite and friendly here, and I don't understand why you got all snippy at me today. You are welcome to ignore my questions if you like. It's better than sarcasm to be honest.

  11. I'm not "snippy" Doug. It's not my personality to be "snippy". I had answered the question. This is a support forum and not a chat forum. I considered the issue to be resolved by me providing the answer and the links to back it up. But it's your thread so please feel free to change the setting again to "unresloved" rather than insulting me by accusing me of being sarcastic when I wasn't.

  12. You don't think

Of course it's not my fault. I have provided the answer to your question above. I have no other information to provide and neither do any other Volunteers. As you can see from the Staff post in the official WordPress.com blog the decision has been made...

    is snippy?

    Hmm...

Anyway, it's obvious we have a personality conflict here, so I suggest you simply ignore my posts.

    Thank you,

    doug
