Autostart soundcloud audio player on home page only (oxygen theme)

  1. So, I've embedded the soundcould player in a text widget in the footer of my page, because I would like it to be accessible across all pages. I have it set to auto start so that music plays when the home page (a showcase template) is loaded, but I don't want it to restart every time someone clicks to a new page (I tried adding "auto_resume=true" to the short code, but that had no effect). Is there a way to alter the css so that the player only autostarts on the home page?

    If necessary, the widget could be removed entirely from other pages.

    I'm new to css, and have figured out how to exclude content from the showcase template, while leaving it on the other templates, but can't seem to manage the reverse.

    My blog is currently set to private, because this is an update for a page for my job, and it's can't be public until it's complete.

    The blog I need help with is aystest.wordpress.com.

  2. The WordPress player does not provide autoplay music. You can try an alternative player: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/12/05/alternative-audio-players/

    Please note: autoplay is a major irritant for some people (myself included). Many of us will click out never to return again if we experience someone else's musical taste and have not been given an option to listen or not. I never return to such blogs.

  3. Thanks for the quick response, timethief!

    Getting it to autostart isn't the problem. I'm using the soundcloud player wich autostarts easily. It's preventing it from autostarting on subsequent pages that I'm trying to work out. I want it to autostart on the showcase template (front page) only.

    I understand your caution about autostarting, but as I said, this is for an organization, the ED feels strongly about having music autostart on the home page.

  4. Is there a way to alter the css so that the player only autostarts on the home page?

    There is not a way to alter the way an audio player such as Soundcloud works with CSS only—that is something you would need to add custom coding in the theme to accomplish.

    The only other way I can think of to do this would be to just add the shortcode to the home page only and not in the footer or any other widget areas because those are displayed on all pages. There really isn't a way to do that in the Oxygen theme unless you were to use a static front page and add the shortcode into the page content area and then style it from there if needed.

  5. Thanks designsimply!

    I'm using a showcase template with a content slider for the front page. So, while it's technically a static page and not my posts page, I don't think I have any way to add content to it. If I type something into the page editor, it doesn't show up.

    I tried pasting the shortcode into a post and sticking it to the front page so it would come up below the slider, but that didn't work either. the player shows up in the post, but not in the sample of the post that appears on the showcase page.

    So, is there no way to remove a widget from the default template, while leaving it on the showcase template? That seems to me to make the most sense, but I haven't been able to make it work.

    Thanks again!!!

    Correct. I should have been more clear to say a static front page without a page template like the showcase. I think the Oxygen showcase template is worth keeping though.

    I tried pasting the shortcode into a post and sticking it to the front page so it would come up below the slider, but that didn't work either. the player shows up in the post, but not in the sample of the post that appears on the showcase page.

    The Oxygen showcase template actually ignores sticky posts for the recent posts section because it uses sticky posts in a special featured content slider.

    So, is there no way to remove a widget from the default template, while leaving it on the showcase template?

    Hmm, well there's a way to hide a widget on a specific page type using CSS, but I'm not sure how all browsers would handle it—could have some unpredictable results. Here is an example you can try for single pages:

    .page #text-7 {
    	display: none;
    }

    You could also add other page types like .archives, .search. .post, etc… (everything except .home).

    .page #text-7,
    .post #text-7,
    .archives #text-7,
    .search #text-7 {
    	display: none;
    }
  7. Thanks! I tried that, but it makes the widget disappear from the showcase/home page as well.

    Should I enter this at the top of the css editor instead of below what I've already entered? I'm very new to css, but as I understand it, code placed at the bottom takes precedence, right?

  8. Ahhh, you're right. That's because in your blog, you're using a page as the home page.

    I was able to hide it on the home page but adding an additional rule, BUT the music still plays because the code is still loaded even though the widget is hidden from display. So it's a bust!

    .home #text-7 {
    	display: block;
    }

    Oxygen together with the showcase template just isn't going to let you post an shortcode on the homepage only. I think you could use some of the ideas we talked about above on a different theme though.

    I'll also throw in support for the idea of not using autoplay at all. Even though the symphony music is beautiful, having an autoplay element below the fold on the home page is extremely annoying to me personally. Think about repeat visitors too. If your client wants to keep autoplay music on the home page, I would very much recommend placing it at the top perhaps in the left sidebar instead of the bottom in the footer so that visitors can turn it off if it's startling or adjust the sound if it's too loud.

  9. Thanks for all your help! Good thought about placement of the audio player.

    I'm looking at maybe making the home page a splash page with a photo, logo or slideshow and the music player only. Seems a little redundant with such a visual showcase as the main page, but it keeps the auto playing audio player out of the functional area of the site.

    Any advice for someone wanting to create a simple, attractive splash page?

    Again, thank you so much!

  10. I feel the same way about splash pages as I do about autoplay. :)
    My advice would be not to use one.

    If you must use a splash page, my advice would be to make it load extremely fast to avoid the common sentiment that intros are annoying.

  11. I understand the sentiment, I'm just trying to find a solution that works for everyone at the symphony.

    I know this question is off the original topic, but am I able to automatically redirect from a splash page to the true home page?

    I posted this in the body of the would-be splash page:
    <meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="15";url=http://www.aystest.wordpress.com">

    But the editor removed it.

    Maybe I should start a new topic for this...

    Thanks again!

  12. Oh wait, If I change my official home page, my my showcase slider will no longer work, right? Ugh, nevermind.

  13. I typed too soon, the slider and sticky posts still show up on the welcome page. Never mind again.

  14. There are some code limitations on WordPress.com. One is that you cannot post custom meta tags or modify PHP code. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/ for more details.

    If you switched to WordPress.org, then you would have complete control of the code and you could actually modify the showcase template to add in a home page only section—or better yet, add homepage only widget areas.

    I'll do my best to help you push the limits of WordPress.com though, and I hope you stick around and try working within the boundaries. I think AYS is really cool and I like the idea of having it on WordPress.com. Are you certain the organization won't budge on the home page music autoplay issue? Have you considered trying out user testing about autoplay to show whether people like it as a feature or not?

  15. Yeah, we've talked about the possibility of self hosting, and we may yet go down that road, but if possible I'd like to keep the site on wordpress.com. That's why I'm still doing all my css experimentation in preview mode. I don't want to commit to the design upgrade if we end up having to pay for hosting elsewhere. One of the major factors in this decision will be having the music autostart.

    You're helping me tremendously by giving me definitive answers to questions that it would have taken me hours of experimentation to work out.

    In a few minutes I'm going to present the possibility of a simple splash page (no animation, just logo, music player, and link to enter the site) with out automatic redirect, and see if that appeals.

    I may go back to looking for other themes, but the look of oxygen is so clean and modern, and I love the slider. But if you can recommend something that might work better, I'm very open to input.

    Thank you!
