I'm using the theme Clean Home on my blog http://main.bellx1.com/
The background image I've placed using custom CSS becomes helpfully transparent under the main body on all browsers but Explorer, where it remains opaque...
Is there a way of encoding the transparency in the CSS?

You answered your own question really: Internet Explorer. Only IE8 and IE9 understand transparency, but only if you use their specific code when doing the transparency. Why would IE want to be compliant with web standards? [/rant]
The following would be what you would add to #wrapper to accommodate IE.
filter:alpha(opacity=88);
That will be removed by the wp software since it is not standard CSS.
Aaaahhhh! Firebug won't accept it anymore either.
