Backing Up A WordPress.Com Photo Blog?

  • My wordpress.com blog is primarily a photo blog. I know how to use the export feature to get an xml file, but this doesn’t save the photos and after a few years,I have many photo posts. Do you know of anyway of backing up the blog including the photos in place. Thank You!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • The only way is one at a time from the media library and browser by opening each image and then saving them to a folder on your desktop.

  • Which of course will not do a thing to link the images back to their original posts when you set up the blog again. You’ll have to reupload and reinsert them in their post.

  • Oh dear…3 years of photos would have to be cut and pasted?

  • If it will put your mind at ease even a little, with the redundancy that wordpress has with all of their servers, and the continuous backups they do, there is little change of you losing any images.

My policy has always been that any image that I put on my blog gets saved to a folder on my computer and I keep my computer constantly backed up. If anything should happen to my images on my blog, I still have them on my computer and on my backups.

  • I take great care to back up everything on the computer especially my photos so making a folder for the blog photos is a great idea. It would be really heart breaking to me to lose the blog photos, but then that sounds pretty silly doesn’t it. But I will start saving them and it’s good to know that WordPress is doesn’t ‘lose’ blogs. I switched from Blogger and I have been really happy. If you posted a question like this in a Blogger forum, it wouldn’t get answered at all. Thank you to ‘the sacred path’ and ‘just jennifer’ for taking the time to answer my question…

  • Welcome!

Truly it only makes sense to back up your own images on your computer. I have folders for my wordpress.com blogs set up in a way that anything I upload is already saved in the corresponding “files” folder on my computer. I have a lovely little back up external drive (need a bigger one) and have regularly scheduled backups in place. It’s an investment in peace of mind. Now I’m looking for an online backup service for the over 10,000 digital images I’ve accumulated so far.(!)
