For the book cover just simply use the image widget with a JPG file of the cover with bar at the bottom of the image to indicate either paperback or electronic version. That's what I do on my site.
For a sample of the book I think your best option is to set a featured post on your front page, that has a preview of the post.
I can't think of a way to have a sidebar widget with a lot of text, that wouldn't look very confusing.
You could experiment with the text widget to see what happens.
