Can a widget appear only on the home page? (Google Search Algorithm)

  1. Is it possible for a widget to only appear on the home page of my blog?

I ask this because I have a couple advertisers who wish their ad only appears on the main page. This is because there is apparently a penalty associated against sites that display ads on every single page of a website. At least that's what I've been told by more than one advertiser.

This could've easily been done if we were allowed to change our templates but since this is wordpress.com I was wondering if its possible to display the widget which contains the ad only on the home page.

I would think this affects all blogs which have advertisers.

    Thanks,
    Zarar

  2. If you put advertising on a wordpress.com blog, then you will likely get it deleted. There is no user-generated ads allowed here at wordpress.com. It is against the terms of service.

  3. Grammatical error: There are no user-generated ads allowed here at wordpress.com...

  4. wordpress.com + paid advertising= probably best to check in with Support because as far as I know those two don't add up to the TOS.

  6. If you need ads, then you are going to have to go self-hosted (hire a web host and install the stand-alone wordpress software from wordpress.org).

  8. The question here wasn't whether one can have ads, it was whether it's possible to have a widget on just the home page or not.

BTW, yes, you can have ads on WordPress.com and you can have all the ads you want on your blog and it won't get deleted, you just can't use ad services like Google AdSense etc.

  9. @arsenalist, you cannot advertise on WordPress.com. Read this FAQ as it covers more than adsense: http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/12/08/adsense/ . People get their blogs suspended for having ads from the pet store down the street and other similar things.

    From the FAQ:

Adsense, Yahoo, Chitika, TextLinkAds and other ads are not permitted to be added by users.

As far as having widgets on one page but not another, that would require access and modification of the underlying theme files which is not allowed here at wordpress.com.

  10. I should add, that it may be possible to have widgets appear on different pages if you start with the sandbox theme, but that theme is a total blank canvas so it basically has "no" design to start with.

  11. And from the "Wordpress.com or WordPress.org ? The difference" sticky post at the top of the forum: http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-read-me-first-before-posting?replies=1

WordPress.org is free blogging software. With WordPress.org, you can install themes and plugins, run advertisements, edit the database and even modify the PHP source code.

None of that can be done here at wordpress.com.
