Can I cancel Domain Mapping but point the domain elsewhere?

    I have decided to move one of my WordPress.com-hosted blogs to my own server. This blog is currently mapped to a domain that I purchased through WordPress.com (GoDaddy). I have a few questions:

    Is it possible to cancel domain mapping (i.e., 'myblog.wordpress.com' will no longer redirect to 'myblog.com'), but keep the domain name I registered with its current registrar, and simply point it to my own nameservers?

    Also, if I am no longer using the Domain Mapping upgrade (which, as I understand, costs $13/year), how much will I be paying yearly for the domain name alone? According to the WordPress.com Store, the breakdown for the $18 is:

    Registration $5.00
    Mapping $13.00

    So if I point my domain somewhere else, would I be paying $5 a year from then onward?

    The blog I need help with is thetwentyishconservative.com.

    Change the name servers to new host

    Change primary blog to your blog here

    Dashboard >> Store >> Domains >> pick the base blog

    I think you can also cancel the Mapping at

    Dashboard >> My Upgrades >>

    Don't forget also to disable auto renew

    registration is $ 5.-- a year -

    You don't need the domain mapping once you move - but you can't get a pro-rated refund - just resetting the name servers and setting the primary blog back to the base blog should do it

    So, I won't have to pay the extra $13 for mapping anymore? There isn't any individual cancelling for Mapping. After disabling auto-renew on the domain, i received this message:

    You successfully disabled auto renew for Domain Mapping.

    Does this mean the domain name will no longer auto-renew as well? Will the renewal cost $5? ($18 - $13)

    Thanks for the help auxclass, but you didn't exactly answer my question. I know how to cancel the Mapping upgrade, how to point the nameservers elsewhere, etc. Basically, what I'm asking is:

    Once I cancel Domain Mapping and point nameservers elsewhere, will I simply pay $5 a year from then on?

    I am not asking if I NEED domain mapping. I know that registration is all I need. What I'm asking is if the domain will auto-renew even WITHOUT Domain Mapping.

    Is the domain registration a non-standalone part of the "package" that cannot be renewed without purchasing Mapping as well, once I start using it with a non-WordPress.com host?

    I want to know if I should transfer the domain name to a different registrar. Or maybe set it up to renew at GoDaddy separately, seeing as the package I purchased at WordPress.com no longer applies.

    You cannot buy a domain name through WordPress.com WITHOUT purchasing domain mapping as well. Because of this, I am unsure whether or not additional actions are required on my part to make sure my domain stays active.

    The domain registration comes as a package with domain mapping. You can’t buy a registration from us without the mapping.

    To point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), please follow the instructions here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/#changing-domain-name-servers

    Note you will need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as "nameservers" or "NS records" instead.)

    Nobody's answering my question. :(

    This is my question:

    I am not going to renew Domain Mapping. I have cancelled auto-renew it in the WordPress.com store. I do not need it anymore, as I am hosting my blog myself now.

    Will my domain name automatically renew? Or do I need to renew it separately?

    I have already purchased a domain name, through WordPress.com (or through it's partner, GoDaddy). What should I do to ensure my domain does not expire? Should I go to GoDaddy to renew it? I can't find a "renew domain but don't renew mapping" option.

    The domain won't auto-renew and will expire on 2014-01-21. This guide explains how to transfer the domain name to another registrar. Or you can keep the domain with us and just change the nameservers to your new host.

    Yes, that is what I meant. Where do I renew the domain when that date comes? At WordPress.com? Or at GoDaddy? Do I need to transfer it to a different account or a different registrar if I want to renew it?

    At WordPress.com. You'll receive a notification e-mail before the expiry date to renew your domain with us.
