Can I have a post visible on the home page but not in the rest of the blog?

I have a few sticky posts that I want visible only on my front page, but not in the list of other posts on my site. Is that possible? (The sticky posts have more detailed information and serve as information "pages," and I plan to have less-detailed versions to appear with my other posts.)

  2. While there isn't a way to exclude sticky posts from the Recent Posts widget, you might want to try the workaround described here:

Just let me know if you have further questions.

Thanks for the quick reply, kathrynwp. I've looked at the topic and don't think it's what I'm aiming for. I'm not talking about a widget or recent posts. I'm looking for a way to show 5 or 6 posts in a slider (I'm using the Selecta theme, which has a great one), but I don't want those posts to be visible in the "regular" list of posts [is there a name for that?].

I want to keep them separate because they will be "how-to" posts describing ways to use and search my blog. I've put a category of "sticky" on each of them, and set up my category cloud to exclude "sticky" posts, so they don't show up there, but when people browse all my posts, they are visible there.

I tried setting up the posts as both sticky and private, but that doesn't work. Is there a way to limit posts to a certain date? If that's so, I could pre-date them to before that time.

Any ideas would be great. I'm not a newbie, but I'm not very experienced in this. Thanks. : )

  4. Thanks for the clarification. Maybe once I understand what you mean by this:

the "regular" list of posts [is there a name for that?].

... I'll be able to offer an alternative suggestion that might work better for your needs. :-)

Could you give me an example of a post that you have stickied, and then show me where it shows up now that you don't want it visible?

If you made a screenshot it might be helpful. Here's a guide on how to make a screenshot, if you're not sure: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

You can upload the screenshot in your Media Library and then post a link so I can see it.

    Thanks!

I apologize for not knowing the vocabulary. I don't know the word for all the posts on one's site. When any post is selected, there are arrows at the bottom for Previous Post and Next Post. The archive I guess ?

I'll try to get a screen shot, but, again, what I would like to do is select a group of posts to appear only on the front/home/main page as stickies, but not appear when someone is browsing the archive (using the Previous and Next buttons).

Did I thoroughly confuse you? Sorry if I did. Let me try to find a more articulate way to explain it.

Thanks for your help . . . and your patience.

  6. Hi there - thanks for the clarifications, I think I understand better now.

Right now I see one sticky post, titled "Best testimonial ever." When I click the "Newer/Previous Posts" links, that sticky post stays at the top, but I'm not seeing it show up anywhere else. Do you see that post "Best testimonial ever" appearing somewhere else where you didn't want it? Could you provide a link or screenshot so I can see what you mean?

As a more general answer to your dilemma, I don't think it's possible to selectively exclude certain posts from the blog archives. An alternative route could be to use a theme that has an area in the header for widgets and place your "permanent" text in text widget, instead of using a post of any kind - that way you won't have to worry about it showing up anywhere else.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks again for your help. From what I've read, it doesn't seem possible to do what I want.

That post is tagged and categorized, so when one looks at the archive under those tags and categories, it shows up in the long string of other posts in the archive that have those tags or categories. But that gives me an idea: maybe I'll remove those tags and categories, so the only place it can show up will be as a sticky--which is what I want. How does that sound?

That sounds like it'll accomplish what you're after - great idea. :-)

Let me know how it goes.

I think that does what I want. As long as no one searches for a random post, I can cherry pick the ones I want as sticky--as long as I label them properly.

    So far, so good!

Next up: my picture/icon/gravatar/avatar-thing on this page is a random design and not the image I uploaded. Did I do something wrong?

Not at all. This is likely due to the rating of your Gravatar, as some blogs can choose the maximum rating they're willing to be displayed in Settings -> Discussion. In regards to this forum, we only display G rated Gravatars.

You can update your Gravatar rating here by hovering over the Gravatar, then clicking the rating icon that appears to the right of it:

Let me know how that works for you.
