I just started my blog and do not want to be self hosted at this time. I like a few of the premium themes but wasn't sure if I could use them and have the customization they allow if I'm not self hosted.
The blog I need help with is escapeandcreate.wordpress.com.

Great! So what is the advantage to using a premium theme over a free one? I would assume it would be more customizable.
Each theme whether free or paid is unique and operates as the theme designer coded it to operate. You can visit the Themes Showcase and view premium themes and their features as well as visiting the live demo sites for each one.
In general, they will have more flexibility or more unique features and in some cases allow for a certain amount of customization to the look and how the theme operates. You will just have to review the premium themes and see if one of them has the features and flexibility you desire.
