I would like to have visitors sign in/register/subscribe before they are able to download content such as white papers, articles, etc. Is there a way to do this? Sometimes finding the answer is impaired by the inability to articulate the right question.....Thank you in advance!

No "members" thing as such
the best you can do is to have visitors contact you and you send them a password to a password protected Post or Page - in that case use a contact form to keep your email address off the internet.
You could also store the documents on another site that does require registration and then have links to them from your blog.

The site linked to your name is not a blog - there is a blog from that site but it is on blogspot so you are way in the wrong forum
