Cannot import blog from another WP site

  1. Hi, I'm building up a new WP site on other host and I'm trying to import the content of my blog hosted on WordPress.com.

"Target" site has an "IMPORT" feature which I used several time to keep new site updated (even if it actually imports the whole WP blog).

Everything worked fine until today, where import failed EIGHT times.

Tech support told me that my WordPress.com blog send a ""HTTP/1.1 504 Gateway Time-out"" error message.

I'd like to know if it is temporary or what and how may I fix this problem to get my blog imported.

    thank you for your help

The blog I need help with is retrogamesmachine.wordpress.com.

  3. It sounds like you have been able to obtain an export file from WordPress.com but are having issues importing the content into your new blog hosted elsewhere. Is that correct?

Not exactly. When I click on TOOLS in my admin page and choose IMPORT I get a list of importing tools such Blogger, Blogroll, LiveJournal... and so on.

Among these I have a WORDPRESS option too which descripcion states "Import posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags from a WordPress blog.".

Choosing it I'm asked to type my old WordPress blog URL, username and password.
    No more.

Import operations have been alway succesfully until these days when WordPress.com server, stating what Techsupport told me, send a ""HTTP/1.1 504 Gateway Time-out"" error message in response, so that import fails.

  6. What is the address for the blog you are exporting, and what the the address for the site where you are trying to import it?

  7. hi...

    I'm exporting retrogamesmachine.wordpress.com

    to retrogamesmachine.altervista.org

  8. Thanks for the extra details.

Because of the size of your site and number of media files, your new hosting provider may not be able to handle a single import.

you may wish to break up your export file into a few different chunks by exporting ranges of post dates rather than creating a single export file. I had another issue similar to this earlier today: http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-do-you-report-a-bug-on-wordpress?replies=12#post-1492706

Beyond that, if you are running into connection issues with your new hosting provider, you will need to address that with them.

  9. Thank you ... I will try as you suggest...

but I have still a little doubt....
If the site I'm exporting , which is hosted on wordpress.com, sends a ""HTTP/1.1 504 Gateway Time-out"" error message, the connection problem is not on the wordpress.com server?

  10. I'm looking into why you are unable to get an export file. I appreciate your patience and should have more information shortly.

  11. There was a little glitch on our end that was preventing the export. You should now be able to do export your blog. If you run into any further issues with it, please let me know.

  12. Thank you very much. I'll try and if something still go wrong I'll let you know.

    Your support was great! :)

  13. You're very welcome! I'm sorry for the delay in resolving the issue, but hopefully it's all taken care of now.

  14. Hi...

I'm very sorry to say that I'm experiencing exactly the same issue.

Choosing IMPORT form "target" site and given retrogamesmachine.wordpress.com as "source" site import procedure still fails with same message.

    don't know what to do...

  15. I'm very sorry you are still running into this issue. I'll dig into this some more for you, and see if we can't get you sorted out soon.

  16. In case it may be useful for you I tried another way to export my blog.
Insted of try to import from my other site I went into retrogamesmachine.wordpress.com and choose EXPORT from tools to get an export file which I would later import into other site.

Unfortunately this is what I got:

    Goshdarnit!

Something has gone wrong with our servers. It’s probably Matt’s fault.

We’ve just been notified of the problem.

Hopefully this should be fixed ASAP, so kindly reload in a minute and things should be back to normal.

    Hope this may help....

    Lookin' forward to your news...

Thank you very much for your help!

  17. I'm so sorry for the extra delay. Please try your export now and let me know how it goes.
