Hi there, I am new to CSS and WordPress theme customisation...
I downloaded a theme just now and tried to configure it by copying the CSS code to the theme editor on WordPress, but it doesn't work... Can anyone help?

CSS is theme dependent. You cannot use the CSS from one theme with another. Each is designed by an individual who has their own labeling and naming conventions, and they seldom, if ever match.
You have to modify the CSS on the theme that you are going to use here, or use the Sandbox theme and start from scratch or use on of the CSS "skins" that were designed for the version of Sandbox used here.
Also you can google "sandbox skins wordpress.com" and you should come up with quite a few.
