Can't figure out layout

I'm switching my website over to wordpress and within the next 2-3 weeks will be transferring my domain name too, so it won't be the free wordpress site anymore. I was trying to get as much as I could switched over in the meantime so I have as little down time as possible.

My problem is this, I want my site to look like a site, not like a blog. I've figured out how to get a static homepage, but from there, I'm lost. I've watched and read tutorials, and it's not helping.

Basically, on each page, I want to have a picture and a teaser that will link to the full story on a seperate page. Ultimately, there will be quite a few of these picture/teaser combos on each page.

How do I do this? Is it dependent on the theme I choose? Am I able to do this now with the free wordpress or must I wait until I've transferred my domain and have the paid, downloadable version?

I know this is a lot of questions and I'm a complete newbie. Building my site through the other service I was using was so simple because I could put things exactly where I wanted them, and wordpress has thrown me for a complete loop!

    Help!

The blog I need help with is therealrealhousewife.wordpress.com.

We don't provide support on this forum for those who hire web hosts and set up their own WordPress.org installs. They on different software and all support for them is provided at the WordPress.org site - not here. Here's the link http://wordpress.org/support/

  3. P.S. I forgot to mention that you will have to register a WordPress.org username account over there.

Yeah, I know it's a totally separate thing, but it was my understanding that switching over is considered an upgrade (am I wrong?) so it seemed like I could get the basics down using wordpress.com until I was ready to switch and then just make the move. The problems I'm having is on the wordpress.com site, with not being able to figure out the formatting there. I guess what I want to know is, can I do what I described in my OP with wordpress.com? Meaning, with the pages and having a picture/blurb link for each article I want to display, linking to another page entirely, organizing my wordpress.com site like a website and not a blog? I want each page to do that.

    Can wordpress.com do that?
