Captions for the carousel view?

  1. Since the carousel view was introduced i have not been able to get the captions for my gallery pictures. Tried to change settings in the gallery but without any luck... How can I get the captions to show? Thankful for help!

The blog I need help with is johannainjapan.wordpress.com.

  2. The carousel was rolled out pre-broken. There were promises to fix it, but they have not materialized and no one knows if or when they will. If it stays broken long enough then the brokage becomes "features."

Apparently their attention was captured by some other string of shiny beads.

  3. Descriptions were trashed with the Carousel view, but I thought Captions were working.

  4. Nope. Last I tested with some images on one of my test blogs here, no captions showed up.

  5. I'm not getting any text at all:( Does it depend on the theme maybe?

  6. It shouldn't depend on the theme, unless they also broke the theme at some point. All themes should support captions.

  7. But how?! This is so annoying!

  8. Just tried now with a test post and all is good for Captions.

@johannainjapan-can you point us to a post where you have captions on your photos?

  9. Hey maybe I just figured his out... I just got captions for one of my photos at least. Will look in to this a bit more an see if I can make it work! Thank you guys!:)

  10. OK, I just tried again and apparently this has been fixed.

If I upload the images, add captions to each one and then click "save all changes" and then insert the gallery into the post and preview, the images in the gallery show the captions. If I click on an image, the carousel loads and the caption shows at lower left. I switched to the theme you are using and the captions show up there as well.

Check the images in your galleries (in the media library) and make sure that captions are there for them.

  11. All the photos that I saw, at least on the front page of your site, didn't have captions. Could it be that you accidentally entered the Caption in the Description field?

  12. Hi, new user here.

Seems to me that this carousel feature displays captions okay in FF 3.6 (old version but still supported) but not in IE8. The WP blog demonstrates this clearly if you run it from each browser...

Will this bug be fixed for IE? Does anyone know if its broken in other versions of IE?

  13. I strongly doubt it. WP appears to be pretty much walking away from IE.

  14. @raincoaster: Thanks for the info I didn't know that; and I just found this on a WP support page:

Note: We recommend that you use either Firefox or Chrome for optimal performance with WordPress.com.

So it seems like you're right. Strange policy because IE still has the biggest market share.

I'll have to decide whether I can live with this bug for my readers (who are mostly using IE) or move to another platform.

Strange policy because IE still has the biggest market share.

That's simply not true. Here are the latest browser stats:
    Internet Explorer 19.5 % Firefox 36.6 % Chrome 36.3 % Safari 4.5 % Opera 2.3%
    Internet Exlporer versions
    IE10 0.0 % IE9 5.7 % IE8 10.2 % IE7 2.6 % IE6 1.0 %
    http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_explorer.asp

WordPress.com has not supported IE6 or IE7 since May of 2011.

Seems to me that this carousel feature displays captions okay in FF 3.6 (old version but still supported) but not in IE8.

I use both Firefox 11 (my main browser) and IE8 (when I help others) and I see captions in both browsers.

  16. IE has always been a headache for designers, because it ignored (and continues to ignore) various web standards. So even if IE had the largest share, this should be reason for Microsoft to improve their lousy browser rather than for WP to comply with it.
I've been a regular in these forums for several years: when problems prove to be browser-related, it's almost always IE, sometimes Chrome, almost never Safari or Firefox.

  17. @justpi
That's so true. it's ridiculous that Microsoft keeps producing substandard browsers that are a PITA to web developers and web designers. Those I know categorically refuse to create compatibility with IE6 and IR7 versions. I rarely use IE8 and I dumped Chrome because Firefox is reliable and they aren't.

I'm surprised by what iantest99 has said as the stats of only IE7 2.6 % and IE6 1.0 % are extremely low:

I'll have to decide whether I can live with this bug for my readers (who are mostly using IE) or move to another platform.

  18. Those readers should learn that the creature that Microsoft has planted in their computers has one principal function: you can use it to download a decent browser.

  19. lol :D

  20. @timethief - I based my market share comment on these:
    http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_web_browsers

I can fully appreciate that WP cannot support every version of every browser. That's why I was asking if anyone knew which, if any, IE versions would work. Strange that you can see captions on the carousel using IE8 and I cannot.
