categories mixed with other categories

    I'm using categories instead of pages, but they are all mushed together. My Welcome category is mixed with Writing posts. Welcome is my first page. Is it written in stone that ALL posts go to the first page? Quite frankly I've struggled with getting this website built, but you are VERY user unfriendly place. Your instructions are vague and filled with geekese, which I cannot follow. Support is unsupportive. I like what you offer, but I feel like I'm trying to knit a sweater while wearing boxing gloves. I'd like to stay, but I'm not happy. Anything you can do?

    The blog I need help with is skimbleshankstherailwaycat.wordpress.com.

    I think your difficulties may be partly stemming from the fact that you may not be returning to threads you post to read the answers Volunteers have posted into them.

    Also your WordPress.com username is linked to a site that's not a WordPress.com blog and every time I have answered you I have had to click into it to locate your WordPress.com blog. You can fix this easily. Here’s how to link your username to your blog in your blog Dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings -> then scroll down to Account Details. Then scroll down to where it says ‘Website‘ select the URL for your primary wordpress.com blog and then save changes.

    Now every time you sign into the forum we can all click on your username and your blog will be linked to it. And every time you leave a comment on a blog your username can be likewise clicked and your blog can be instantly located.

    @gaylordcat: You could try using a static page for your home page, rather than the default posts page. Then use a custom menu to direct people to categories pages. A search on the Support page for "static front page" produces this very helpful set of instructions for changing the front page of your blog to a static one: http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

    The custom menu option is "Menus" under appearance. When you go to the Menus page (from your dashboard), be sure to check your "screen options" (at the top) and make sure that "categories" is checked. Then add your categories to your menu.

    There are some good walk-throughs and tutorials on this site and on various wordpress.com oriented blogs and tips sites.

    BTW, your avatar links to an old, out-dated, non-word-press.com site. You should go in and change that so that people can easily find your blog without having to click through your defunct site. Especially since the majority of people on this forum are just fellow users or volunteers, it would be a courtesy.

    If you continue to have difficulty with the site after playing with it some -- i.e., working on it -- you can contact support directly or post a problem in the specific staff support forum.

    No bad here at all just lots of confusion. I could see my posts and yours but my posts couldn't be seen as they were in the spam filter. A split second after I asked my question and clicked "submit" I realized what was going on so I emailed Staff and macmannx fished out my comments.

    I'm so sorry you got caught up in this cloudy affair but the silver lining is your instructions are good! Please don't back away from answering questions -- we'd love to have you help! :)

    Thanks for pointing out the silver lining, TT! I appreciate your comment, since I read your post then reread mine and thought that I'd been less helpful (and wondered whether I had just been having such a glitch-filled day that I simply hadn't noticed your responses, though that seemed really unlikely) -- but I learn a lot here, too, so that was good. :)

    I hope the OP finds the advice & follows it, or asks follow-up in one of the threads if he has difficulties with it.
