   Is there a way I can 'banish' the categories? I don't want categories.

   Just don't tag anything with them. Leave them as Uncategorized.

   I get the impression that you don't want to see any trace of categories in the sidebar, not even the Categories heading. You can do this under Presentation by:
   - switching to a theme that allows sidebar widgets (almost every wp.com theme does)
   - dragging the categories widget out

   Now, how do I remove a widget? It's not working when I drag it out.

   isn't there a bug with the sidebar at the moment? i thought i saw some threads with titles suggesting this.

   you could wait for the issue to resolve before trying to remove the widget again.

   I'm probably stating the obvious, but you are dragging widget not just out of the sidebar but down to the widget depository below?
