   After accidentally converting all my categories to tags (rather than just the ones I wanted to) I set about recreating my categories. It seems that whenever I place a category under a parent category, the sub-category disappears from my category list, and from the available category check list on the post page. This wasn't the case before I converted all my categories to tags. What's up with it? Is this a known problem?

   maybe it has to do something with your sub-categories being empty?

   I know I have a sub-category which is not listed on the frontpage and is empty. So you could test it by writing a post in your sub-category.

   No. My sub-categories are not empty.
