change url name

  1. Hi,

I am an amazon web services user and I have a micro instance running to be able to hit the elastic IP associated with the instance. When I do so, I am presented with my site that uses wordpress.

I have phpmyadmin configured in such a way where, "http://MY_IP/phpmyadmin/index.php" directs me to MySQL to where I can choose the wordpress data base. I found tutorials on how to change my URL. After doing so, whenever I try to hit my IP, the 'fancyness' of the site breaks OR I will not be taken to anything; I will get an error.

What i'd like to do is change my URL from an IP address to a name that I prefer. From what I gather, I need to buy a domain name ($12/yr). Once I buy it, then I can change it to be the home and siteurl in the wordpress database - currently that does not work.

    Thanks very much,
    Joseph

  2. The free hosted WordPress.com blog linked to your username is empty. We cannot access the PHP files underlying our free hosted WordPress.com blogs. This is a multiuser blogging platform. Please read this entry > WordPress.COM vs WordPress.ORG: The Differences

  3. What I want to do is use plugins and the eStore. From what I gather, this is not possible with the WordPress.COM and I *must* use WordPress.ORG to enable those features for my site?

  4. What I want to do is use plugins and the eStore. From what I gather, this is not possible with the WordPress.COM and I *must* use WordPress.ORG to enable those features for my site?

    Hi Joesph!

    Yes, that's correct. :-)

  5. That's correct. I’m afraid e-commerce isn’t possible here at WordPress.com, and there are no plans to develop anything for that at this time. You need to hire a web host and set up a WordPress.org install as those are not possible on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

  6. Could someone provide a link for buying a domain name from wordpress?

    Thanks,
    Joseph

There is no upgrade you can purchase that will provide you with FTP access and the ability to install plugins on a free hosted WordPress.COM blog

    Important Notes Before Upgrading
    Same Rules Apply
    – The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service.

See here please > Domain Mapping

  8. Joseph: In your WP.com blog Dashboard, go to Store > Domains. So, for you, it'd be here.

  9. I just have two conditions:

    1) I need to have a website like "example.com" where 'example' is a prefered name.

    2) I need to use Plugins (for my extension source code) and the eStore...

Thus, if I understand correctly, I MUST buy a domain name for 17 dollars a year - which is not a problem for me.

    Is this correct..?

  10. What you want to do can NOT be done on a blog hosted on WordPress.COM - does not matter if you buy a name or not.

You need to host somewhere else.

You need to make friends over at WordPress.ORG, they have lots of guides.

  12. Could you recommend a host that has eStore and plugin like features?

  13. "Plug-in's" are generally a feature of the WordPress.ORG software - you need a host that can run the WordPress.ORG software.

WordPress does have a list of some hosts that meet their requirements: http://get.wp.com/hosting/

And I repeat - you should make friends over at WordPress.ORG they are the keepers of the software you are going to be using - this forum is for supporting sites that are hosted on WordPress.COM.
