I have edited aspects of my stylesheet, hit 'save stylesheet'
and refreshed my site but can not see the changes....
even changes like changing my background colour dramatically.

The blog I need help with is familyspiritadventures.com.
It is difficult to help without knowing what we are supposed to be seeing on your site. I see a brownish background declared both as a color and then also an image declared, repeating, that is apparently the same color as the declared background color.
I checked http://familyspiritadventures.com/ and I can see CSS changes working there. Please post again with more information if you're still having trouble with this.
