   I am trying to change my blog name from 'tommypmoore' to 'anewname' - not literally, (both are .wordpress.com). 'anewname' is not in use but I get this response when I try to access it: "anewname.wordpress.com is no longer available.
   The authors have deleted this blog."

   Is there anything that can be done?

   There is no recycling of deleted blog URLS here at wordpress.com.
   http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/delete-blog/
   http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

   You can register another blog with a similar name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/

   Or you can purchase a domain name via a domain mapping upgrade as in that case it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.

   If the blogger who owns the blog has provided contact information or left comment open you can contact them and if they agree to give you the blog this process can be used to transfer it to you.

   Otherwise you will have to register another blog URL. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account

   If you want to purchase a domain name via a domain mapping upgrade you can do that and it will not matter what the underlyining .wordpress.com URL is. See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/
