Every time I click upload after selecting an image the file location is simply deleted and no image is uploaded...any suggestions?

Yes. To obtain the best image quality be sure you optimize and pre-size the image to the exact dimensions required by the theme prior to uploading it. you can optimize and re-size it in either a desktop image editing software or online image editing software to fit the space you intend to use it in.
Header images of exactly 960 × 260 pixels will be used as-is on Chateau. Also be sure that the image file type is an accepted file type. See troubleshooting images for more tips > http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/troubleshooting-images/

Thank you; my image is a jpeg (105 kb) and exactly 960 x 260; very strange; WP does not ever attempt to upload the image and then error out b/c of a slow connection or something like that; it simply wipes the file location as soon as upload is clicked and then leaves the curor blinking in the empty box???

Are you using Chrome? If so I suggest you try using Friefox or Safari instead.
